Vega IX is an M-class planet located in the Vega (Alpha Lyrae) star system in the Alpha Quadrant. It is the ninth planet in a primary star system in orbit of an A-type Blue-White Main Sequence star. It was home to several sentient species in known history, including a colony of humans from Earth.

Features[]

Habitability[]

Vega IX is a Class M (Minshara) planet within the habitable range of its star. It was home to a bio-diverse ecosystem, richly populated with flora and fauna. Atmospheric make up was 75.01% nitrogen, 22.05% oxygen, 1.01% argon, 0.30% krypton, 0.08 carbon-dioxide, 0.07 xenon, and other trace gases.

Geography[]

Vega IX is a moderately seismically active planet, with a ring of known dormant and semi-dormant volcanos forming islands in the far east hemisphere near the smallest continent. Sixty percent oceans, with three large continents and a fourth smaller one. The 'western hemisphere' is home to the largest continents, one each north and south of the equator with a smaller strip of land joining them. The 'eastern hemisphere' is home to the third largest continent north of the equator somewhat near to the west. The fourth is equidistant from the east and west coasts of the southern continent of the western hemisphere, and is roughly half the size of next largest.

Each of the continents lay out significant examples of mountain ranges and large spans of plains with rivers and lakes that made the planet exceptionally rich for agriculture with a growing season roughly 80% of the Vegan year (381 earth days).

Landmarks[]

Lake Eden[]

Lake Eden was named by Captain Joseph M. Smith as it was surveyed from orbit aboard the ECS Moroni. It was so named, and declared as the great life giver and a holy sign. It is a deep water lake, by definition an inland sea. Four rivers flowing out from it to the oceans of either coast include two deep water rivers, the Hiddekel and the Pishon.

In later years, this lake remained the freshwater source for the cities of this continent for hundreds of years. It was also a source of clean replicator blank proteins farmed just under its surface, and a variety of freshwater fish and seaweeds. Shipping between the coasts from Port Pishon to East Gideon and the reverse were a major industry from 2210 forward after the founding of Port Pishon.

Gihon River[]

Named for one of the four Rivers of Paradise, the Gihon flows east and is a wide, shallow river well known for hosting wild life and varieties of fresh water spawning salt water fish, such as the species of salmon the LDS Church brought with them.

Hiddekel River[]

Named for one of the four Rivers of Paradise, the Hiddekel flows west and is a wide, deep water river well known for being a trade route across the continent and for shipping to and from Lake Eden. The LDS Church colony group founded its first settlement of Gideon's Redoubt along the north banks. The Clan Badi colony group established its first settlement along the south banks. Together their joint settlement of East Gideon spanned both the Hiddekel, and the Phrath by 2400.

Phrath River[]

Named for one of the four Rivers of Paradise, the Phrath flows west and is a wide, shallow river well known for hosting wild life and varieties of fresh water spawning salt water fish, such as the species of salmon the LDS Church brought with them. The joint settlement of East Gideon spanned both the Hiddekel, and the Phrath by 2400 maintaining a clean water agreement in the Phrath that ensured good resources of water and fish from it.

Pishon River[]

Named for one of the four Rivers of Paradise, the Hiddekel flows west and is a wide, deep water river well known for being a trade route across the continent and for shipping to and from Lake Eden.

Climate[]

Vega IX is largely a temperate climate, ranging from lows of -10c at the poles to 45c at the equator. Little of the arable land exists at the equator, leaving the majority of the colony spaces ranging from -4c in winter near the Vegan Artic Circle to 38c in the summer in the tropics. Stretching almost the entire distance between both magnetic poles, the largest continent features tundra at its northern and southernmost points, with seasonal variances allowing for a peak temperature of -12° Celsius. The central archipelago of the western continents rests on the equatorial line, and enjoys a year-round average temperature of 32° Celsius.

Population[]

The Current population as of 2428 is a mix of federation species though largely represented by humans. The next largest subsect would be that of what are sometimes referred to as xBs, or reclaimed Borg. The world of Vega IX itself had been assimilated by the Borg_Collective in 2409 and only declared free of the collective in 2425. Those who had escaped were encouraged by Vega United to return and rebuild, they were joined by family and friends from the Colony who had been freed from the slavery of the collective. They opening invited others who had been slaves of the collective and now liberated were seeking home and community, finding they share a common experience not available in general society.

Culture[]

In the two years since ground breaking, the people of the new Vega Colony have opened their hearts and their home to other displaced peoples who wish to work to recover more of their world from devastation of the Borg_Collective. A large population of former Borg are making lives for themselves there among the population of those who have a special understanding for their experience. The efforts and knowledge of the former Borg being put to the task of removing remnants of Borg_Collective technology and infrastructure have been perhaps the largest key in their acceptance.

In the past, beginning with the first colonists to arrive in the early 2100s, humans knew they were not alone on the planet. Settling on both the Northern continents were two separate groups of humans, the first choosing the western hemisphere due to the larger land mass and more arable hand was the internationally funded and organized Vega Colony mission, which saw additional flights to join them over the coming hundred years.

The second group was much smaller, choosing a more difficult landing area away from the existing colonies on the northern continent of the eastern hemisphere. This group was a privately funded colony which was launched out of Philadelphia and comprised largely an extended family group known as the Badi clan. Having experienced persecution in one form or another, this ethnically linked group chose to form their own colony.

A third colony existed during this time as well, this one based on the smallest continent in the south east. This colony was from another world, the records indicated it was (translated to) Delta Triciatu. They were insular, and resisted any contact an as such all knowledge of their colony was only obtained through federation records sharing with the Seyalian people. According to the Seyalians, Delta Triciatu was what the people of the third planet of their system named the star known as Lta and written into Starfleet records as Delta. Much confusion came from two planets of their system being inhabited, and not in agreement of the designation. Further confusion resulted from their insistence of naming their planet the same as their star. The Triciatu people who settled Vega IX named their new world Triacus. This was not used as common reference, because of another planet named the same in the Federation Database, and there being a larger population using the name Vega IX.

The Triciatu had settled within the city of Tial previously inhabited by another species native to Vega IX approximately year 2020 of Earth. The name of the species is not known, records only refer to them as the Vegan Tyranny which was a translation and never fully updated to their native species name. The Vegan Tyranny had ruled multiple star systems for at least three centuries, but died out at some point in the early 21st century of Earth. The colonists from Delta Triciatu had taken their cities for their own, in what some believe to be a form of vengeance, and it is postulated though not proven that they may have had a hand in the pandemic that wiped out the Vegan Tyranny.

The Triciatu cities of Vega IX were razed by the Borg in the initial attacks, as their technology was perhaps distinctive and advanced in comparison to the rest of the colony. Experts believe it may have been the crystal technology that had caused the Tyranny to originally take from the Triciatu, and the integration of it into their technologies which caused the Borg to target the whole of the ruins as well as the active cities of the Triciatu of Vega IX.

It should be noted that early attempts to form trade relations with the colonists from Delta Triciatu resulted in exposure to a bacterial infection that proved fatal if not properly treated. It was named 'Vegan Choriomeningitis'. Later records discovered in anthropological studies done on in the north east had found that the Vegan Tyranny were actually a cybernetically enhanced race, and believed they had inadvertently created the disease synthetically. It was released again in the 2200s when one of the North Western Continent explorations discovered a facility on that continent and broke the quarantine.

The western continents have a race of primate like species called the Scora. They lived mostly in the mountainous regions of the western coasts of the western hemisphere, making the jungles, valleys and mountain forests their home. They are herbivorous but still hostile to incursions of their perceived territory.

Governance[]

The current colony is being controlled through a democracy, with representatives to operate day to day decision making. Their spokesman is a former Vega Colony inhabitant and recovered Borg, going by the name Nine of Twelve.

Exports[]

As the former colony consisted of a diverse population across multiple continents, they prided themselves on self sufficiency. The Badi contingent maintained a relationship with their kin on Earth, and did have a reciprocal relationship of exports and imports. As such, the majority of the goods and services produced on the planet were of a western hemisphere affair, while the exploration of the system, mining and refining of raw materials was more of an north eastern affair. These were supported and aligned with the DFIG of Earth.

The colonists from Delta Triciatu had both, but did not trade with the human colonies, reserving their trade with their home world.

Openly traded materials included:

  • Duranium
  • Tritanium
  • Dilithium
  • Perium
  • Latinum
  • Platinum
  • Gold
  • Silver
  • Aluminum
  • Precious stones
    • In lesser quantities many other raw materials.

Special Interest[]

It should be noted that the DFIG is deeply invested in the recovery of the Vega Colony as its founders were among those that settled with the Clan Badi. The DFIG had created a sizable endowment in the Vega Survivors Fund[1] to aid the colony survivors just after the Borg Collective had invaded the planet. Since the reopening of the planet, DFIG has been the largest private contributor to the project of returning Vega to habitable status and returning colonists to a normal life. In addition, they created a facility and research organization to further those goals of returning the colony and colonists to a prosperous and healthy life. In the Mount Sinai center, they established the Vega Cybernetics Research Center and will be breaking ground on the Ann Gale Medical Center very in New Gideon in early 2428.
