Variable-Geometry Shields are an independent shield system designed to modify a ship's Warp profile during high Warp and Slipstream travel. The goal of these shields is to improve engine efficiency by optimizing field stress when the ship travels extended journeys at over Warp 8 velocity or while within a Slipstream corridor. The concept for this system is based on the Variable-Geometry Warp Nacelles on the Intrepid-class.
Integrated system element created by Vree'oklo'klan and first used on Navigator-class starships. The new Odyssey-class has this system fully integrated into it's design.
The Variable-Geometry Shield grid is not strong enough to withstand most weapons fire. This system should only be active during high warp or slipstream travel.
