CLASS DESCRIPTION[]
Following the Dominion War, Starfleet began plans to develop larger exploration ships similar in scope to what the Galaxy class had originally been designed to accomodate. With the outbreak of the Klingon War, these ships were adapted to serve as Command ships due to their large size and built-in manpower. Although this role has since been taken by the Odyssey and Concorde classes, examples of the Vanguard and her variants can still be seen operating throughout Federation territory.
Ships of the class:[]
- USS Vanguard (NCC-90996)
- USS Navigator (NX-93011) (Navigator Variant)
- USS Independence (NCC-93027-A) (Navigator Variant)
- USS Kitano (NCC-93451)
- USS Nomad (NCC-93713) (Nomad Variant)
- USS Navras (NCC-94010) (Nomad Variant)
- USS Sentinel (NCC-95792) (Sentinel Variant)
- USS Emissary (NCC-96003) (Emissary Variant)
VARIANTS[]
[]
The Navigator-class was originally intended to replace the Galaxy and Sovereign-classes. The initial design incorporated design elements from various starships, including the then-planned Nomad and Emissary. Further, the Navigator-class pioneered the Slipstream technology initially planned to be installed on the Vesta-class. Despite the success of slipstream, the Navigator has not been produced in large numbers, and both the prototype and Independence have been recalled. With the completion of the Vesta and other slipstream-capable classes, this class has been deemed unnecessary for further development.
(Note: This variant exists only within the 22nd's own lore, and was created by DGM Q due to the absence of the Vesta class at the time. With Q's departure and the addition of the Vesta to STO, the Navigator is no longer required.)
Nomad[]
Initially considered as an improvement over the Navigator, the Nomad bears strong similarities to the Dauntless class originally discovered by Voyager in the Delta Quadrant, but on a larger scale. One notable design element is the laterally-oriented torpedo launchers instead of the traditional fore and aft-facing launchers. The Nomad also bears additional armor plating, in an attempt to increase survivability during combat. As with the Navigator, this variant has not seen large-scale development.
Sentinel[]
This variant bears similarities to the Vanguard, but is more streamlined in an attempt to fare better with slipstream velocities. Like the other variants, this variant has seen only limited production as newer classes fill operational roles.
(Note: This variant is the "Cryptic-Canon" version as it appears in Star Trek Online. The fleet-specific version can be found on the Avenger class page.)
Emissary[]
The Emissary bears similarities to the Nomad, with a return of the more traditional fore and aft launchers. Like the other variants, this version has seen very little development, and is slated for retirement at the end of its existing refit cycle.
