The Quirinal Class is a high speed response vessel, capable of some of the most rapid long distance travel in Starfleet. Use of this design for a Medical Ship is controversial to a point as it does not contain nearly as much internal capacity as other designs, even those in use for decades. The choice was not for long term service, but rapid response. The Hospitaller Program fleet is to be that rapid response, to hold long enough for more robust resources to come to the aid of the afflicted.
The Hospitaller Fleet is still under construction. When completed, they will be stationed at strategic locations around the galaxy to provide the most efficient response. The Montagnier is anchored at Spacedock 101 in orbit of Magna Roma due to its proximity to the Artesia Gateway, giving the capacity to provide services to both the Milky Way and the LMC.
Due to the mission of primarily working with highly infectious diseases, the Montagnier has among its crew many of the most qualified commissioned and non-commissioned PhotonicMedical Doctors and ViralResearchers in the UFP, including many former EMH models. There are also other Photonic crewmembers who have been assigned or volunteered for this service. OrganicStarfleet crewmembers operate and maintain the ship's systems for the most part, but most of the medical services and handling of infectives are handled by Photonics and holographic generated assistants in order to limit the chance of vector-born transmission. Those OrganicMedical Doctors and ViralResearchers working with the infectious material are ordered to work through a shipboard Holo-conference as a protective measure against transmission.
