U.S.S. Michael Faraday NCC-73570 is a Nova class Federation Starship that was put into service during the latter 24th century and well into the 25th century. First commanded by CPT Arzad Sajoran, a Bolian scientist and explorer.
Mission[]
The Michael Faraday was commissioned, as other Nova class starships with the intention of replacing the aging Oberth in the roles of scout and scientific survey vessel.
History[]
USS Michael Faraday NCC-73570 was launched on October 3, 2372 from Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, Mars. She was dedicated with a quote from Michael Faraday himself, "Nothing is too wonderful to be true, if it be consistent with the laws of nature."
Known most of its lifespan simply as the Faraday, official documentation lists this science-heavy designed craft as the "Michael Faraday" in order to distinguish from the Norway class ship named for Admiral Faraday some years later.
Much of its lifespan the USS Michael Faraday performed the specialized function of survey craft, utilizing an ability nearly unique to the Nova class allowing atmospheric flight and touch down upon the planets themselves to offload cargo and colonists.
Originally the class was built to replace the aging Oberth class which had long outlived its intended use as a spaceframe. Designed with an intended lifespan of 50 years, the Nova class ships are due to be replaced by the next science vessels on the drawing board. However; due to years of continued conflicts, the Nova class is being looked at to continue its role as one of the most versatile and capable small ships of Starfleet.
New advancements in automation and artificial intelligence make it possible to reduce the crews of many ships, and it has become a necessity due to expanding borders and reduced numbers of fleet personnel.
As of 2424, the USS Michael Faraday is due to accept a complete overhaul of power and drive systems. This involves a reconfiguration of the secondary hull and pylons.in order to test on a live platform the feasibility of upgrading the Nova line for the next 20 years vs completely replacing them. If successful in its testing, this may be the first in the line to be reborn to decades more of useful service.

Modification / Upgrade / Field Testing[]
(1) Sensor Refit - 2390, 2413, 2423
- State of the art sensors installed in preparation for the coming mission, once per decade
(2) Computer Systems refit - 2390, 2408, 2423
- Most recent upgrade:
- Main Computer coming online Stardate 96111, The new main computer of the USS Michael Faraday is a test model of the new computer for the Sovereign-class, undergoing field tests.
- Secondary Computer is capable of running all ship's systems, operating as a redundant processor tasked to monitor operations of the main computer during this field test.
- Tertiary Computer is dedicated to the operation of the 'Avatar' processes, and the holographic drone systems. A maximum of 500HU can be run before needing to shift functions to the main computer, which requires a command decision. Holographic systems are intended to be segregated to avoid growth and bleed over of data and processes.
(3) Weapons Systems update - 2395, 2408, 2424
- The 11 phaser arrays updated to the current standard installation, providing a significant increase in firepower over the previous installation.
(4) Shield Systems Refit: 2395, 2413, 2425
- The shielding has a preset to tuning to allow use in the presence of metreon radiation as of Stardate 86860.
- Advanced Multiphasic Shielding Upgrade - 2413
- SOTA Multiphasic Shielding test model - 2425
(5) Holo-deck - 2413
- During the refit of 2413, the security office, and the assembly/briefing room were removed and replaced with a small holo-deck on deck 3. (6m*8m*3m)
- During the mission in the Donia system, the crew modified the stern section of the main cargo bay dubbed cargo bay 2 into a holo-deck. Online as Stardate 87988, the beginning of the 'Faraday Velocity tournament. (12m * 12m * 6m)
(6) Holographic Crew Systems Upgrade - 2423
- With the following systems, crew complement is reduced to 30-35, less than half of the previous 80 man crew.
- Avatar Program - The Michael Faraday Avatar coming online Stardate 96129: A new generation of computer artificial intelligence interface, attempting to provide a more controlled AI interface capable of interfacing with any system operated by the ship's computer. Attempts made to simulate independent intelligence without true self-awareness while avoiding the instability of earlier attempts. The Avatar system operates using the Tertiary computer processor but may be transferred to the main computer in a sequestered operational process.
- As of Stardate 97018, the Michael Faraday Avatar was installed in the main computer as a sequestered process, still requiring communication through channels to perform operations.
- Drone Systems - Field Testing beginning Stardate 96100, control transferred to Michael Faraday systems 96145. Using a mixture of physical drones becoming ubiquitous in Starfleet, and holographic versions of the same, the drone system is under the control of the main computer and guided by the Avatar system, though may be overridden by command authority.
- Engineering Drones are capable of performing many of the tasks that an organic engineer would normally perform, leaving the engineers to the tasks of overseeing the repairs rather than some more dangerous hands on tasks.
- Security Drones are a force multiplier for a ship's security teams. Armed with standard phasers and micro shield emitters they team with the organic crew to provide security services when required.
- Holographic Extension Drones are capable of providing holographic field emitters to spaces in which the systems are offline or non-existent, much like a mobile emitter, but still linked to the ship's computer.
- Emergency Holographic Crew - With the success of the EMH over the last 5 decades, Starfleet computer scientists developed emergency holographic crew members of many varieties, from engineering and operations to security. Installation of holo-emitters throughout the ship allows the EH Crew to access every vital area of the ship. The installed programs are:
- LMH.V - 150HU per instance. A doctor capable of being online for extended periods of care.
- MAH.1 - 10HU per instance. Medical Assistant Hologram is capable of first aid, triage, and minor medical treatments autonomously. The program was developed to provide assistance to a doctor or EMH in medical situations. Training much like an orderly, and capable of following detailed instructions and interface with an active EMH to allow direct communication. The MAH.1 is an effective multiplier of the capabilities of an EMH.
- EEH.3 - 50HU per instance. An engineer capable of providing services from junior engineering to chief engineer for a period of as much as 10 days before needing to be cycled.
- ESH.3 - 30HU per instance. Security team members capable of as many as 10 instances to be loaded into operational buffers at one time, and operate continuously for not more 5 days between cycling.
- EBOH.2 - Bridge officer holographic crew, capable of being configured for operations, sciences, engineering, and helm. Must be cycled once per 24hr period in order to keep fully operational.
(7) Life Support Refit - 2413
- Crew Quarters reconfigured to allow for more space in quarters, and laboratory space appropriate for the reduced crew.
- Increased Maximum sustainable life support for a MEC value of 750, though the new configuration is intended for transfer of no more than 300 colonists and meager possessions in relative comfort for a few days.
- Modification for sharing full life support through an umbilical.
(8) Nacelle Refit - 2424
- The warp nacelles, as well as the pylons, are being reconfigured for continued allowance of atmospheric capabilities, and the new allowance of the use of the quantum slipstream drive.
- Dorsal Mission Pod modification - Hard-points for attachment of mission pods or cargo containers.
- Note: Slip stream and Atmospheric flight not possible loaded with dorsal cargo in place.
- Ventral Mission Pod modification - Hard-points for attachment of a rear ventral cargo pod.
- Note: Atmospheric flight not advisable loaded with ventral cargo in place.
(9) Drive / Power Systems - 2424
- Engineering Section Refit - Stardate 97325.
- Warp Core replacement - Stardate 97325.
- Auxiliary Fusion Generator replacement - Stardate 97325.
- Slipstream Drive - Stardate 97325.
