(Note that Enterprise NX-01 was a United Earth starship, not a Federation starship).

History[]

The name Enterprise, and variations thereof, has been in use since the early days of Earth sailing vessels. This tradition carried from the British to the Americans, and was transferred into space via the early days of the United States space program. With the invention of warp drive and the formation of the Earth Starfleet, the first starship was named Enterprise, under the command of Jonathan Archer. Notable examples of pre-warp ships include the following:

  • Multiple sailing vessels in the 17 and 1800's, including both British (HMS Enterprize) and American ships (USS Enterprise).
  • USS Enterprise (SP-790): A motorboat used as a patrol craft during World War I.
  • USS Enterprise (CV-6): A Yorktown class aircraft carrier, and the most dedicated ship of World War II
  • USS Enterprise (CVN-65): The world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, operational from 1961 to 2017.
  • Enterprise (OV-101): An orbiter used to test various systems for NASA's Space Shutle system. Enterprise never actually entered space.

USS Enterprise (XCV 330)[]

An early prototype ship intended to merge Vulcan-style ring nacelles with contemporary earth technology. This ship was not utilized for general service. The ship was active in the interim period between Vulcan first contact in 2063 and the NX program in the 2140's.

Enterprise (NX-01)[]

The first of United Earth's "warp 5" ships, launched in 2151 under the command of Captain Jonathan Archer. This ship is notable for first contact with hundreds of new species, as well as facilitating relationships with the Andorians, Rigellians, and Tellarites, all of which became founding members of the Federation. The ship was officially decommissioned in 2161, around the same time as the signing of the new Federation's charter. The ship would later be retrofitted with a dedicated engineering hull and upgraded systems. It would be recommissioned as USS Enterprise (NX-01) and serve for several more years, eventually ending up at the Fleet Museum in orbit of Athan Prime.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701)[]

In 2245, Starfleet commissioned a new USS Enterprise, then one of the state-of-the-art Constitution-class starships. This ship saw action through the Federation-Klingon war of the 2250's, and has been commanded by a series of Captains, including Robert April, Christopher Pike, and James T. Kirk. It would serve until the 2270's, when it was lost over the Genesis planet during a failed takeover by Klingons.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-A)[]

Following the destruction of the Constitution-class Enterprise, the USS Yorktown was renamed to USS Enterprise due to the heroic sacrifices of the previous ship. This replacement, primarily commanded by Kirk, was retired a few years later, but was instrumental in several notable missions even during its shorter service with the Enterprise name. The irony is not lost on many historians, as the original Enterprise managed to elude the USS Excelsior during a mission to rescue Spock. The ship would serve for several years, and would eventually be retired and placed into the Fleet Museum in orbit of Athan Prime

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-B)[]

This ship, commanded by Captain John Harriman, was instrumental in saving a group of El-Aurians from the Nexus. This action was notable because the ship performed its rescue with many of its systems nonfunctional, most of which were not scheduled to be installed until the following Tuesday. Despite severe damage caused by the anomaly, the ship was repaired and continued her service for another 30 years.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-C)[]

Sometime later, an Ambassador-class starship was commissioned, and served for several years before being destroyed in 2344 during a confrontation with the Romulans. However, this engagement actually proved the ship's (and class's) worth, as the confrontation proved to the Klingons that the Federation was a worthy ally. This sacrifice solidified the Khitomer Accords, which lasted for over a century.  Some later reports form Romulus suggest that survivors from this Enterprise may have been captured.  Empress Sela also claims to be a descendent of Lieutenant Tasha Yar, explaining that the Enterprise-C had traveled to the future and interacted with the Enterprise-D at some point.   Starfleet Command remains skeptical, although they are continuing to investigate the possibility of these claims.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-D)[]

In 2363, the new Galaxy-class Enterprise was launched under Captain Jean luc Picard, and served faithfully until 2371, when it was destroyed over Veridion III. During this time, the Enterprise saw heavy use in both exploration and diplomacy, and was host to numerous First Contact situations. This Enterprise was also the first Federation starship to encounter the Borg, and its crew the first Starfleet officers to disconnect a Borg drone from the collective. The ship was considered lost after its stardrive section was destroyed over Veridian III, with the saucer making an emergency landing.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-E)[]

Following the completion of the new Sovereign-class Enterprise, Picard and his crew (many of whom were veterans of the previous starship) spent their first year on a relatively quiet "shakedown cruise", before travelling back in time to stop the Borg from preventing Earth's assimilation. During most of the Dominion War, the Enterprise was tasked with maintaining diplomatic relationships with the Federation's allies (and not-so-friendly neighbors). Even after the War, the Enterprise continued in its diplomatic role, and was even forced into an internal matter within the Romulan Star Empire in 2379. Sometime in 2408, the Enterprise was sent to investigate a loss of contact with Starbase 236. She is now missing and presumed destroyed.

USS Enterprise (NCC-1701-F)[]

The current starship is an Odyssey-class starship, having been commissioned in 2409, now serves the Federation under Captain Va'Kel Shon. Shortly after launch, this Enterprise was rushed to Deep Space 9 to assist in the rescue of the station from the 4800, a group of Dominion ships that had been displaced in time by the Prophets of Bajor. Following that emergency, the Enterprise returned to Utopia Planitia for maintenance and repairs (a visit that conveniently coincided with Federation Day).

The Enterprise has been instrumental in several large fleet actions, including the Iconian War and the Battle of Bajor.
