Starfleet is the primary military, diplomatic, and exploratory organization in the United Federation of Planets. Operating hundreds of starbases and thousands of starships, Starfleet is tasked with both the defense of the Federation, and exploration of new and uncharted territories both inside and outside Federation borders.
History[]
Tracing its roots back as far as the 2130's, Starfleet was originally part of the United Earth government, and had an organizational structure much like the current one. However, with limited resources and personnel, Starfleet was only able to field a few starships at first. In 2151, Starfleet launched their first long-distance exploration mission with Enterprise (NX-01) under the command of Captain Jonathan Archer. That mission would lead to significant discoveries across the next several years, along with human's first contact with the Andorians and Tellarites. Along with the Vulcans, these four species would eventually form the core membership of the United Federation of Planets in 2161.
With the formation of the United Federation of Planets, Starfleet began to shift into what it is today, quickly growing in size and strength as the Federation itself grew. Each member planet shared technology with the other members, leading to a net improvement as individual strengths helped the whole. Starfleet's mission would evolve as well, with defense, exploration, and diplomacy being the primary purpose of the organization. Starfleet ships have therefore been at the forefront of multiple first contact scenarios, combat actions, and treaty negotiations.
Organization[]
Although not strictly a military organization, Starfleet is organized much like a military, with military ranks and divisions. Starfleet Command controls the day-to-day operations, but Starfleet ultimately reports to the President of the United Federation of Planets, and the Federation Council.

In addition to these, additional positions may be needed, such as legal services or intelligence. However, the majority of these positions operate on starbases as opposed to starships, and are far less common within Starfleet. Some positions, such as Strategic Operations, are only used during a state of war or large-scale operations requiring the coordination of entire fleets.
