The second most senior enlisted rank known to exist in Starfleet below Master Chief Petty Officer, but above Chief Petty Officer. The equivalent ground forces rank is Staff Sergeant.
NCO's of this rank will often hold positions of leadership, occasionally including department head positions. One example of this was SCPO Miles O'brien, who held the position of Chief of Operations aboard Deep Space Nine for seven years.
