On Halloween night, our heroes would find themselves stepping through the holodeck doors and into the food court of a American mall circa the mid to late 1980s, clearly after closing time from the dark city sky shown through a nearby wall-sized window. It was dim, lit around the edges with neon signs depicting ghosts, black cats outlined in purple, and other various monsters of the collective Federation folklore. Their multicolored glow shimmered delicately in the form of a massive, intricate web that had been spun over the ceiling. Half of the square plastic tables had been removed to accommodate a dance floor, and one side of the court’s shops had been taken over by a karaoke stage. The other side was overtaken by a big counter tended by their ever-dutiful holographic bartender, Zombie Hank.
They would then notice the sign, printed with elegant gothic calligraphy:
Welcome, all, to Hallowed night,
A chance for merriment and fright.
If all you seek is but a treat,
I bid you stay here by your seat.
If with a trick you seek consort,
Venture beyond this food court.
And should you meet a tricky end,
Merely see our zombie friend.
