The most junior MACO line rank, immediately inferior to Captain and superior to Master Sergeant. In comparison to Starfleet's ranking system, a Lieutenant is equivalent to Ensign or Lieutenant Junior Grade.
Traditionally, ground forces lieutenants are divided into "First" and "Second" Lieutenant, with First Lieutenant being the more senior rank.
Typically the entry-level rank for most Commissioned Officers, Lieutenants lead platoon-size elements consisting of the platoon Sergeant and two or more squads (16 to 44 Soldiers). A seasoned lieutenant with 18 to 24 months service will lead more specialized weapons platoons. As a senior Lieutenants are occasionally selected to be the Executive Officer of a company-sized unit (110 to 140 personnel).
