Trenchard was born and spent the first years of his life living aboard a cargo freighter owned and operated by his father. After his father's refusal to turn over one of his crewmen to the Orion Syndicate, the ship was attacked and the crew murdered. A nearby Vulcan-operated starfleet ship assigned to deep space survey responded to the distress signal, and Jonathan was found to be the only survivor. The chief science officer, having lost his own family during the Dominion War, chose to adopt the young terran. Jonathan idolized the vulcan crewmembers and was raised as one of them by his adoptive father.
At the Academy, other human cadets found him to be cold, and at times callous. Trenchard had never before interacted with Terrans and found it unsettling. His closeness with the vulcan cadets caused a group of his class mates to alter the photo in his service file by adding pointed ears.
Jonathan has spent most of his life aboard starships and seems most at peace when flying.
