The Hospitaller Program falls within chain of command of the Starfleet Disaster Response command.
The Mission of the Hospitaller Program is the provide Rapid and Significant Response to Medical Disasters. It is for this reason the renewed Hospitaller Program Fleet is being built with a starship design capable of exceptional response speed. Each fleet of the UFP's Starfleet has dedicated medical ships, but they are often limited in their response speed. This fleet's mission is to provide as near to immediate response as possible and take lead in disaster response. Every Captain must have SFDR training and experience, and institute SFDR training programs on board to bring their staff up to expectations of what may be required.
History[]
The tradition of the Hospitaller Ship began in 1978 with the Mercy Ships. Starfleet maintained hospital ships throughout its history, though in war time the practice falls to the needs of the service. Even though there are a number of Hospital Ships still in service they were depleted during the Hobus disaster, and continuing conflicts that stretched into 2430. The numerous new fleet yards have managed to rebuild the fleets, along with dedicated Medical Ships for each fleet.
The Hospitaller Program is specifically to support SFDR in its mission. It was proposed and championed to Starfleet Medical & Starfleet Command by Captain Dahlia DeLancey MD,Ph.D while she was Commandant of the Magna Roma SFM Academy. She was inspired by one of the last Hospitaller Ships to exist, the USS Hestia - NCC-26292 tragically lost in 2412. It was a dedicated viral research vessel, and while it was a Starfleet vessel, it housed many civilian staff. In the 22 years it performed as a Hospitaller, the crews & staff could be credited with saving millions, potentially billions of lives.
