The Executive Officer (XO), also known as the First Officer, ensures the smooth operation of the ship while acting as the chief advisor to the Commanding Officer. The XO is usually authorized to make decisions on behalf of the ship without first consulting the CO, although this right can be limited. When the CO is off the ship, the XO takes command. If the CO or XO are not available, the Second Officer takes command.
All Department Heads report to the Executive Officer, and the Executive Officer is usually expected to lead away team missions (especially hazardous ones) unless otherwise ordered by the Captain. On smaller ships like the Saber and Defiant classes, the XO is considered to be a secondary position, filled by a department head in addition to their normal duties. On larger ships, the XO is a dedicated position that acts as a coordinator to allow the captain freedom to focus on large-scale operations and decisions.
The XO typically has the rank of Commander or Lieutenant Commander, but can be filled by a Lieutenant on smaller ships. To be eligable for the XO position, the officer must have completed Command School Training.
