CLASS DESCRIPTION[]
Initially launched in 2287, the Excelsior-class was the prototype for a new fleet of transwarp-capable ships. Though the transwarp project was a failure, the spaceframe proved to be a very capable design, and was approved for general use by 2290.
The Excelsior-class is one of the longest-serving classes in Starfleet history, and is still in active service today. Most Excelsior-class ships have undergone a multitude of refits and retrofits, and many are equipped with state-of-the-art technology.
Excelsior-class ships have been involved with every major action since the 2280's, including both Borg incursions, the Dominion War, and the current conflict. Despite multiple attempts by the admiralty to retire this aging fleet, the class remains in service, though no new ships have been constructed within the last 5 years.
