'Eirene' is the Citadel Space Station's native computer based entity. She is often referred to as an "artificial intelligence" but this is wildly inaccurate. The technolgy that powers Eirene is based on the so-called RN-74 crystals. And, Eirene is in fact a living soul contained in a crystal based matrix. Her origins are unknown, but are known to predate the original dawn war some 2 million years ago.
Eirene was first encountered when the ancient space station was boarded by the Joint Allied effort, Project Magellan Mission LMC -8. Initial contact was made by the Klingon Away Team from the IKS Gortas and Carrouck which responded to the Ancient AI with suspicion and hostility. The hostility arose from the confusion of Eirene believing the boarding parties to be servants of the Dark and engaged them with highly advanced albeit non lethal means. Lt Cmdr. Sinez Kodor was able to make communication with Eirene and convince her that the away teams were not hostile and on a mission of peaceful exploration. The AI believing the Federation was allied with a sect of Travynei not associated with the Dark (See the Sentinel's encounter with 'The People') and assumed the appearance of such a Travynei and after adjusting her language translation matrix stood down her attacks.
Since that evening and until the current date, Eirene has once more re-opened what was once a massive peace platform to the allied forces of Project Magellan. Constructed some 3 to 4 million years ago by the combined efforts of the races now known to be the Slirians and the Unity, the station served as a neutral station to ferment negotiations and settle disputes between all races in the LMC. During the time of the War against the Dark the Citadel under Eirene's custodianship served as the headquarters and primary medical facility of the Alliance of Light and housed millions of refugees. Severely damaged in those final days of the Alliance's defeat, Eirene and her station went dormant and slept until the arrival of the ships of the LMC 8 mission.
By her own admission, Eirene still suffers from memory and data loss from the time of the station and alliance defeat at the hands of the servant fleets of the Dark. However she has been highly instrumental in the current ongoing restoration and recovery efforts to restore her and Citadel to its one time former glory.
Eirene's personality has display an unparalleled compassion towards all things living and an almost maternal concern and protectiveness for those placed in her care. She continues to operated far below her peak capacity and maintains the station and its operations now for the newly gathered Dawn Alliance and for their allies of Project Magellan.
She is quite personable and always answers when called up with maximum effort.
